Self Confidence in Relationships
from:Think about the number of relationships in your life. Not just the romantic definition of relationship, but any relationship between you and another person at home, work or school. The sheer number of relationships is amazing, isn't it? And with this number of relationships, there are bound to be problems. You may face difficult neighbors, failed romances and jealous co-workers, but you can emerge unscathed if you just have confidence in yourself.
The personal benefits of being self confident before entering into any sort of relationship include being able to hold your own, offering your best possible self to the partnership and being less likely to get drawn into unhealthy relationships. Even in relationships that you didn't choose, such as those with family members, self-confidence can avoid conflicts and unpleasant feelings.
Family relationships color every aspect of the person you become. Luckily, most people have a healthy relationship and enjoy the company of their family. If there's a distant relative that they don't really like, they can bite their tongue during Thanksgiving dinner. Some family relationships aren't that pleasant, though. If a family member is manipulative, demeaning or abusive, it can be hard to step out from under their control. It's never too late to be confident and stand up for yourself in an unpleasant situation. Sometimes you can accomplish change through a family meeting and a frank discussion of the problem. Sometimes it might mean maintaining your distance and walking away from a family gathering.
Whether you're new to the dating scene or a world-weary veteran, confidence is an essential tool for seeking a romantic relationship. Confidence is attractive. When you have self-confidence, you're also less likely to put yourself in situations that could lead to trouble. A lack of confidence could lead to minor problems like never doing what you like on a date because you don't think that your interests are exciting. A lack of confidence could also lead to more threatening situations like getting involved with manipulative or abusive partners.
Once you've moved beyond the dating stage into a more serious relationship or even marriage, the dynamics of your interactions necessarily change. Make sure that you maintain your own friends and interests, and work for compromise when there are disagreements. If you are confident, you will remain your own unique person even as you become part of a couple.
Co-workers can produce tricky relationships. You will most likely spend more of your waking hours around your co-workers than around friends and family, so you want your relationships to be pleasant. Keeping things pleasant doesn't translate into not having a backbone, though. Be confident and willing to say no to co-workers who ask you to take on work you're not able to handle, ask you to join a committee you're not interested in, or otherwise force you to do anything you don't want to do. Stand up for what you think is right if someone you work with makes a bad decision. You may want to occasionally bend to the requests of others for the sake of maintaining positive work relationships, but if you do this with confidence, you'll feel better knowing that you're making a conscious decision to say yes to a disagreeable task.
If you're in a position of authority at work, make sure that you remain confident in your power. You're not there to be everyone's friend or to make all of your workers happy. If you believe in a decision or policy, stand by it, regardless of the complaints. Don't take confidence in your authority too far, though, and become dictatorial.
Neighbors can provide another tricky situation because they're hard to get away from if you're not getting along. If conflicts arise, be confident in stating your opinion and work together to create a solution that is agreeable to everyone involved. Just like at work, you may need to occasionally compromise for the sake of peace in the neighborhood, but do so conscientiously.
No matter what the relationship and no matter what the problem, a little self-confidence helps it all come together nicely.
